Symbolic Links

A symbolic link in Unix is a special file that can stand for another file or directory. This enables a single file to appear to exist in more than one directory, or a single directory to appear to be a subdirectory of more than one directory. When a symbolic link stands for a directory, you can use a change-directory command to navigate to the symbolic link's name, and you will navigate to the directory the symbolic link stands for.

MFM uses symbolic links to make navigating MFM's FTP site easier.

For example, the Flyer symbolic link in the ftp://ftp.mfm.com directory makes this directory:

another name for this directory: If you are looking for a Build update to PC Access Flyer, you can click on the Flyer symbolic link in the ftp://ftp.mfm.com directory to reach the Flyer directory in one step. This is faster than drilling down through the subdirectories: to reach ftp://ftp.mfm.com/pub/windows/flyer.
