Information about mooredev

What is the Moore Development Mailing List?

MFM Communication Software, Inc., began the VISTAinfo (formerly Moore Data Management Services) Development mailing list (mooredev@mfm.com) on December 12, 1996. This is a private mailing list available only to employees of MFM and VISTAinfo. The following subject matter is appropriate for this mailing list:

  1. Porting PC Access for Windows to work with the VISTAinfo Compass MLS.
  2. Bug reports or compatibility issues relating to the Compass host-to-client protocol and how PC Access for Windows interprets it.

MFM maintains several mailing lists suitable for other subjects. See:

Why a mailing list?

Adapting PC Access for Windows to work with the Compass MLS is a complex task. This requires several people at three different geographical locations to share many precise details with each other. At MFM, we have found e-mail to be the most efficient tool for work that is complex, technical, detailed, and collaborative. By sending your PC Access/Compass-related correspondence to mooredev, you will reach everyone involved with the project.

MFM archives all mooredev e-mail. The mooredev archive is a complete record of the PC Access/Compass project.

Guidelines for messages

Messages to mooredev are visible to the complete subscriber list, which includes personnel who work for three distinct entities (companies or divisions). Messages to mooredev should adhere to the rules of business (as opposed to personal) correspondence.

Always identify yourself at the bottom of each message, preferably by your first and last name, and include the name of your employer and location. Do not assume all other mooredev subscribers know who and where you are.

Be sure to include enough information in the body of your message to make it understandable to other mooredev subscribers. The other subscribers have a high level of technical competence, but may not be familiar with specific knowledge you possess. If your message refers to information available elsewhere, please give an exact reference.

When referring to specific program features, commands, documents, Web pages, company names, model numbers, or protocol specifications, please use exact names. Pronouns and synonyms are ambiguous and make a message harder to understand. Messages to mooredev become part of a permanent record that others may need to search in the future. By using exact names, you "seed" your messages with keywords that will make your information easier to find later.

When you are initiating a new thread, please invent a descriptive subject line. Browse-by-subject is a convenient way to peruse an e-mail archive. The better your subject line summarizes the content of your message, the more usable the mooredev archive will be.

When you are replying to an earlier message in mooredev, always use your e-mail program's "Reply-To" command. This will keep all replies in the same thread, making the mooredev e-mail archive more coherent and easier to navigate.

Also, when you reply to an earlier message, always include enough of the original message text to establish context. Most modern email programs provide a command for automatically quoting all or part of a message to which you are replying. If necessary, you can always paste in part of a previous message from the Windows Clipboard (if you are using Windows). Usually it is not necessary to include all of the text of the message you are replying to. Doing so makes e-mail replies needlessly long. Edit the original message text down to include just the points you are replying to. A person who needs to see the full text of the original message will be able to find it on the mooredev archive.

The mooredev archives

The mooredev e-mail archives are available on the MFM Extranet. Since mooredev is a private mailing list, you must have a username and password to browse the mooredev e-mail archives. You will receive a username and password when you subscribe to mooredev. Thereafter, you will receive a reminder of this username and password in a periodic informational message.

If you do not have access to the World Wide Web (unlikely, if you are reading this page), you may obtain digests of past messages via e-mail.

Finding out who is on the List

Always sign your messages

When you send a message to mooredev@mfm.com, always state your name and employer or location at the bottom of the message body. This is particularly important if you are using someone else's email account. If you are replying to a someone else's message or following up on a continuing problem, please include enough context so the other members of the list can make sense of your message. Most modern e-mail programs provide a command for automatically quoting all or part of a message to which you are replying. If necessary, you can always paste in part of a previous message from the Windows clipboard.

Remember that your messages to mooredev will be visible to MFMand VISTAinfo employees. Your messages will also become part of the "permanent" set of digest files. Therefore you might not want to use mooredev to "vent" frustration or to vilify organizations or individuals. Objective criticism of PC Access features or MFM policy is, of course, welcome. We can only improve by learning where we need to improve.
