Instructions for Downloading and Installing the Latest Update

MFM organizes the update files into two archive files:

MFM does this for these reasons:

  • The Program Files for an update are always ready before we finish updating the Help Files to document the changes in the latest update. Therefore we make the Program Files available as soon as possible for our customers who need fixes for critical problems.
  • Not every customer requires the current Help Files.
  • Splitting the update files into two archive files keeps each archive file small enough to fit on a diskette. This is useful if you are a support representative and need to distribute updates to customers who do not have Internet access.

Program Files

  1. Download the Program Files self-extracting archive file to your PC Access executable directory.
    • If you accepted the defaults when you installed PC Access for Windows, your executable directory is C:\PCAWIN.
  2. Open an MS-DOS prompt window and type these DOS commands:

    C:
    CD \PCAWIN
    PCAWUPDT
    EXIT

  3. After you exit to Windows, start PC Access for Windows. PC Access will detect the presence of new update files and ask you if you want to install the update. Click the Yes button and follow the instructions. PC Access will install the update files and exit.
    • Note: if PC Access does not detect the new update files, make sure the command line of your PC Access for Windows icon contains the LAUNCH.EXE program, instead of running PCAWIN.EXE directly. For example, if you installed PC Access to the C:\PCAWIN directory, your PC Access for Windows icon should have this command line:

      C:\PCAWIN\LAUNCH.EXE

  4. Run PC Access again and verify that the PC Access for Windows Main Menu window displays version number: 4.00.098.
  5. Note: if you are updating from a copy of PC Access for Windows earlier than Build 93, you will also need to download the bitmap files for the "Test Printer" window:

Help Files

  1. Download the Help Files archive file: PCAHLP95.ZIP
  2. Unzip this file into your PC Access for Windows executable directory. This will overwrite several of your existing help files.
    • To unzip this file, you should download PKZip if you do not already have it on your computer.
  3. After you unzipPCAHLP95.ZIP, you need to move some files from your PC Access for Windows executable directory:
    • Move D2HLNK16.DLL to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
    • Move D2HNAV16.EXE to \WINDOWS
    • Move D2HNAV16.HLP to \WINDOWS
  4. Your new files are ready for you to use. Click a Help button anywhere in PC Access, or double-click the PC Access Help icon to view the help system.
