The location of the keys shown may be different on your keyboard, but their function is the same.

Key Color Function
Yellow: The [ENTER] key sends your typed information to BORIS. After typing, BORIS does not know you have typed anything until you press [ENTER]. When BORIS asks you a Yes / No question, press [ENTER] to answer "No".
Purple: The [SHIFT] keys are used to enter uppercase letters, and to use the symbols above the number keys at the top of the keyboard.
The [CAPS LOCK] key works like the shift lock key on a typewriter. You may keep this key in the locked position, typing everything in upper case. [CAPS LOCK] has no effect on the function keys or the symbols above the number keys at the top of the keyboard.
Grey: Use the [BACKSPACE] key to make corrections. Backspace over the incorrect information and type over it. BORIS ignores information above or to the right of the cursor. Example:
a. While typing remarks during loading a listing, you wanted to type FLOWER GARDEN, but instead you typed
FLOWER GRADEN.
b. Backspace until cursor is under the R in GRADEN:
GRADEN
c. Retype the rest of the word, and press [ENTER] to enter the information. It is not necessary to [SPACE] over remaining letters.
The "kill" character (the double bar key | , found above the \ back slash) is used to tell the computer to ignore any information appearing to the left of it. Use it to make corrections. Example:
a. You typed: SMITH
b. Type the kill character and the correct name:
SMITH | SMYTH
c. Press [ENTER] to enter the information. BORIS will ignore all data before the kill character and accept only the SMYTH to the right of the | .
Blue: The [CTRL][P] combination should only be used if you are in the middle of a function that you want to abort. Since "END" and "EXIT" can only be entered at a BORIS prompt, they will not work when autoprinting. Instead, hold your [CTRL] key and press [P] to abort the function and return to the Main Menu. You will lose any search parameters or listings that are not completely entered.
Light Green: Number keys - You may use either the number keys across the top of the keyboard or the keypad on the right. Do not use letter keys in place of number keys. For example, do not use the letter "O" for the number zero "0" or the lowercase L ( l ) for the number one "1". They look similar, but they have completely different meanings to the computer.
Red: Arrow, Insert, Delete, Home, End, and Escape - Do not use these keys with BORIS.
