LAN

An abbreviation for Local Area Network. A LAN consists of two or more computers in the same office or building that exchange files and/or run distributed applications using standard network protocols. Standard network protocols may include TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and/or IPX/SPX. Most LANs use some form of ethernet to connect computers over short distances at high speeds (10M to 100M BPS). It is possible to connect two or more LANs in different locations to create a WAN.
