PC Access for Windows Reference Guide

for PC Access for Windows 4.30.158

File Missing

PC Access is unable to find a particular file. Without this file, PC Access is unable to run (or, possibly, PC Access is unable to complete the operation you have currently requested). The error message gives the file name. In most cases, the SETUP.EXE program on your "PC Access for Windows - Disk 1" should have copied the file to your hard disk when you installed PC Access.

· If you are trying to run PC Access for the first time, you probably had an error when you installed PC Access.

· If PC Access has been running normally on your computer since you installed it, and this error message suddenly begins to appear, then someone or something probably has deleted the file.

Write down the error message along with the file name, exit PC Access, and run SCANDISK with a full surface scan to check your disk for file system and media errors. Then search for the missing file by opening an MS-DOS prompt and typing the DIR /S command. For example, to search your entire C: drive for the FILEMNGR.DLL file, type this command:
DIR C:\FILEMNGR.DLL /S
If the missing file name ends in .DLL or .EXE, you can usually re-install PC Access from your distribution diskettes (see notes below). Alternatively, if you have another copy of the same version of PC Access on another computer, you should be able to copy the missing file from that computer to the corresponding directory on the computer where the file is missing. In addition, some PC Access distribution files are available from the MFM World Wide Web site.

Before you attempt to re-install PC Access from your distribution diskettes, please read the following cautions:

· You should create a setup-dump file before re-installing PC Access. Then you will have a copy of your entire PC Access setup in case something goes wrong. If you examine the setup-dump file in Windows Notepad or by printing it out, you can also insure that your PC Access setup files are not corrupted.

· You may wish to back up your PC Access setup files first. You may do so by double-clicking the Back Up PC Access icon in your PC Access for Windows group or folder. If you do not have this icon, you can run the Backup program with the command line:
C:\PCAWIN\LAUNCH.EXE BACKUP
Ordinarily, if you re-install PC Access on top of your current copy of PC Access from your original distribution diskettes, the SETUP.EXE program will leave your PC Access setup files alone. To be on the safe side you may with to back up your setup files before re-installing PC Access. On the other hand, you might not want to do this if you believe your PC Access setup files are corrupted.

· If you have installed a PC Access update since you originally installed PC Access from your distribution diskettes, re-installing PC Access will take you back to the original PC Access Build number that is present on your distribution diskettes. You will then need to download the update again and re-apply it to your new install to take your copy of PC Access back to the current Build number.

· When you re-install PC Access on top of an existing instance of the same copy of PC Access, the SETUP.EXE program should detect that your user authorization is already present on your hard drive. You should not need to re-install your user authorization, and you should not lose one of your install counts. If you receive any sort of user authorization error message, or a warning that the SETUP.EXE program needs to install your user authorization, cancel the operation and follow the instructions for an Internal Error.

· If you have a network copy of PC Access and you have modified your Local Path or Shared Path on the Defaults Setup window, re-installing PC Access will reset these to their default values.

If you are unable to correct the missing file problem, follow the instructions for an Internal Error.
