In MS-DOS, a string of up to twelve printable characters consisting of a base name (up to eight characters), a period character, and an extension (up to three characters). Some example file names: PCAWIN.INI, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and CONFIG.SYS. For more information see the following URL on the Internet:
