You can connect your computer to a distant computer by connecting a modem to your POTS line. POTS lines are usually too slow for connecting distant computers into a practical WAN, but they are fine for letting you connect to your MLS with PC Access. If you run PPP on your POTS line, and your MLS has an Internet connection, you can connect to your MLS and browse the World Wide Web at the same time.
