UART

(Universal Asynchronous Receive/Transmit) A chip which is the heart of a computer's serial port. UARTs come in two common versions: the 8250 and the 16550. The 8250 is slower than the 16550. A serial port may need a 16550 to connect reliably to a high-speed modem. You should have a 16550 UART for reliable modem communication at speeds above 9600 BPS. You must also have a COMnFIFO entry in your SYSTEM.INI file to enable the 165550 UART to run at full speed. Run MSD to find out what kind of UART(s) you have. Note: some internal modems contain an emulated UART rather than a genuine UART. PC Access sometimes has trouble running reliably with an emulated UART. Run PORTINFO to tell if you have an emulated UART.
