Modem Setup: Status Line

The Modem Setup window displays a Status Line showing you some information about your serial port settings in Windows. (Specifically, in Windows 3.1x these settings appear in the SYSTEM.INI file in the [386enh] section.) The Status Line appears in square brackets and shows your current Windows settings for these serial port items:

· irq: displays the value of the COMnIRQ line in SYSTEM.INI., where n is the number of the Port you have selected on the Modem Setup window.

· fifo: displays the value of the COMnFIFO line in SYSTEM.INI. If the value is default or 1, Windows has enabled your FIFO receive buffer in your serial port's 16550AFN UART chip (if you have one). If the value is true, false, on, off, 0 (zero) or anything other than default or 1, your 16550AFN UART is running in 8250 emulation mode and you may get communication errors. · rxtrig: displays the value of the COMnRxTRIGGER line in SYSTEM.INI.

The first two settings are meaningful in Windows versions 3.1, 3.11, and 3.11 for Workgroups. The third setting is meaningful in Windows 3.11 for Workgroups only. Windows 95 and NT use the System Registry to store serial port settings rather than , so you should ignore the Status Line if you are running Windows 95 or NT.
