PC Access for Windows Reference Guidefor PC Access Version 4.30![]() ![]() ![]()
DTE SpeedIn addition to your modem speed, you will see another speed in any communication program, including PC Access. This is the DTE speed that you can specify in your communication software. This speed controls how fast your COM port "talks" to your modem. Your modem may "talk" to a remote modem at a different speed. This may seem confusing, but these rules control how you should set your DTE speed: · Slow modem: If you have a 2400 or 9600 BPS modem, set your DTE speed equal to your modem's speed. · Fast modem: If you have a 14,400 or 28,800 BPS modem, you can set your DTE speed higher than your modem's speed. Your choices for DTE speed will be 19,200, 38,400, or 57,600 BPS. (Your computer's hardware determines these choices, and they don't match the standard modem speeds exactly.) Setting a higher DTE speed is actually beneficial if your modem has V.42bis data compression. For many types of data, V.42bis data compression will make your modem seem to run at higher than its rated speed. (However, if you want to run at these high DTE speeds, your COM port must have a 16550 UART. You can check for this with MSD.)
