Telephone Wiring

If you haven't wired your modem to your telephone wall jack, do so now. Consult your modem manual for directions on how to do this. Usually your modem will have two RJ-11 telephone jacks. One jack connects to your wall jack (see your modem manual to find out which jack this is). Plug a standard telephone extension cord into the "line" or "wall" jack on your modem. Plug the other end of the cord into your telephone wall jack.

The other jack on your modem is not necessary for operating your modem, but is useful for testing your telephone line. If you plug a standard telephone into this jack, you can pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If you don't hear a dial tone, then something is wrong with your connection to the telephone line.
