Photos Don't Download Correctly

Symptoms may include: PC Access locks up while downloading a photo; your online session stops after you get the black-and-white data for a photo, and the MLS doesn't respond to any further commands; you see streaky patterns (sun rays) in a photo; or you hear beeps or see strange characters after a photo. Generally these symptoms result from communication errors. Here are some possible causes:

· You have a high-speed modem, but the serial port your modem uses has an 8250 UART. You can find this out by checking your serial ports with MSD. You can either upgrade your serial port to a 16550 UART, or try selecting a slower Speed on the MLS Setup (General Tab) window.

· Some modems exhibit peculiarities with hardware flow control. This is most common with internal modems having emulated UARTs. To see if this is your problem, try the following:

¨ Change your Flow Control to Fast Hardware on the MLS Setup (General Tab) window.

¨ If that doesn't help, change your Flow Control to XON/XOFF on the MLS Setup (General Tab) window.

¨ If that doesn't help, you can change your Flow Control to None.

· On some computers, you may have to enable 32-bit disk access for photos to download correctly. You can do this in the Windows Control Panel. Start the Windows Control Panel by double-clicking its Program Manager icon (by default, it should be in the Main Program Manager group). Then select Enhanced | Virtual Memory, and read the online help for further information.

¨ Once you have clicked the Virtual Memory button, check the box for 32 bit Disk Access. (If you are running Windows version 3.11, you'll have another check box for 32 bit File Access, which you should leave unchecked.)

¨ Windows may warn you that 32 bit Disk Access may be incompatible with machines that have power saving enabled. For some machines 32 bit Disk Access may be the only way to get PC Access to work well at a high DTE speed.

· If you try all the above settings and still can't get photos, try disabling (unchecking) the View Photos During Download checkbox on the MLS Setup (General Tab) window.

· If all the above tricks fail, you may have to exchange your modem for another model. If you prefer an internal modem, insist on a model with true hardware error correction and a genuine (not emulated) 16550 UART. No matter what modem you purchase, be sure the modem vendor offers a money-back guarantee.
