Brother Multi-Function Printing Problems

Introduction

Printing problems may occur when you install the Brother Multi-Function print driver. The Brother Multi-Function print driver installation program may replace the standard Windows Communication driver (comm.drv) with Brother's Communication driver (brmfcomm.drv).

If your computer is using Brother's Communication driver instead of the standard Windows Communication driver, you may experience one or more of the following problems:

• PC Access cannot print to your Brother Multi-Function printer while you are on-line with PC Access
• PC Access may display a Communication Error during your on-line session

1. In the Run dialog box, next to the Open: field, type system.ini, and click OK.
2. In the SYSTEM.INI - Notepad window, look in the [boot] section for a line similar to either of the following: comm.drv=brmfcomm.drv
   or
   comm.drv=comm.drv
   • If you see comm.drv=brmfcomm.drv, see: Download and Install the Brother Multi-Function Print Driver Fix.
   • If you see: comm.drv=comm.drv, please complete the PC Access for Windows Problem Report Form and MFM Technical Support will assist you.

1. Download and save the WinZip self-extracting file: http://support.mfm.com/files/windows/pcaccess/brother.exe to a directory on your hard disk, for example C:\DOWNLOAD .
2. After you have downloaded brother.exe:
   • Windows 95 and/or 98 users: click Start | Programs | Windows Explorer
   • Windows 3.1x users, use Windows File Manager
3. Go to the C:\DOWNLOAD folder (or the folder where you saved the brother.exe file). Double-click on brother.exe.
4. A WinZip self-extractor window will appear defaulting to your A:\ drive. Insert a blank formatted floppy disk into your disk drive.
5. Click Unzip to unzip the brother.exe file to the diskette in drive A:\.
6. A WinZip Self-Extractor window will display this message: "15 file(s) unzipped successfully". Click OK to close this window. Click Close to exit WinZip.
7. To install the disk you just created, from your Windows desktop:
   • Windows 95 and/or 98 users: click Start | Run
   • Windows 3.1x users: click File | Run
8. In the Run dialog box, type A:\SETUP.EXE and click OK.
   • Note: The installation program may prompt you to specify the location of a missing file. If you receive this message, type A:\ for the location of the missing file.
9. Follow the instructions on your screen to install the Brother Multi-Function Printer Fix.
   • Note: The installation program may prompt you for your original Brother Multi-Function printer driver disks.
10. When you finish the installation, you must restart your computer before the above changes will take effect.
    • Note: Brother provided MFM and VISTAinfo with the brother.exe file you downloaded from MFM's Web site. If you have difficulty with the installation of the brother.exe file, contact Brother Technical Support.
