The Key Disk Method
Note:
You may only use the Key Disk Method with the
Agent version of PC Access for
Windows 4.0
PC Access for Windows comes in Broker/Office and
Agent versions. If you purchased an Agent version and
you own or use two computers, you can install your copy of PC Access
for Windows on both computers. To run PC Access for Windows
on a computer, normally your user authorization must be present on
that computer. However, the Agent version can also run on a
computer without user authorization via the Key Disk method.
To use the Key Disk method, follow this procedure:
Running PC Access for Windows on a Second Computer via the Key Disk Method
- Select one of your computers to be your primary
computer for running PC Access for Windows. For example, this would
probably be your desktop computer. Your other computer (for example,
your laptop) becomes your secondary computer.
- Install PC Access for Windows normally on your primary computer.
(If you have already installed PC Access for Windows on your primary
computer, continue to the next step.)
- Double-click the PC Access Help icon in your
PC Access for Windows Program Manager group
(Win3.1x) or folder (Win95). This opens Windows Help to the
PC Access for Windows Reference Guide.
- In the Contents topic in the PC Access for
Windows Reference Guide click the Uninstalling PC
Access hotspot.
- Follow the instructions in the Uninstalling PC Access topic. (You
may wish to print the help topic by selecting File |
Print from the help window menu bar.) This will not
actually uninstall all of PC Access. Instead you will be moving your
user authorization from your primary computer back to your
PC Access for Windows - Disk 1.
- Once you have uninstalled your user authorization from your
primary computer, install PC Access for Windows normally on your
secondary computer. (If you have already tried unsuccessfully to
install PC Access for Windows on your secondary computer, see
Recovering from an unauthorized install.)
- After you have installed and
tested PC Access for Windows on
your secondary computer, follow the instructions in
Uninstalling PC Access to move your user
authorization back to your PC Access for Windows - Disk
1.
- Insert your PC Access for Windows - Disk 1 back
into your primary computer's diskette drive. Run PC Access for
Windows there by double-clicking the PC Access for
Windows icon. PC Access for Windows will automatically move
your user authorization from your PC Access for Windows -
Disk 1 back to your primary computer.
- At this point, you have set up PC Access for Windows to run
normally on your primary computer. To run PC Access for Windows on
your secondary computer, insert your PC Access for Windows -
Disk 1 into your secondary computer's diskette drive. When
you run PC Access for Windows on your secondary computer, PC Access
will recognize your PC Access for Windows - Disk 1.
Even though your Disk 1 does not currently have
your user authorization on it, PC Access will accept your
Disk 1 as a Key Disk and run normally.
Notes
- The key disk method makes the most sense if you run PC Access
mostly on your primary computer and occasionally on your secondary
computer.
- If you need to use PC Access extensively on your secondary
computer, you should uninstall your user authorization from your
primary computer and move it to your secondary computer. Later when
your work habits change you can move it back. In other words, you
should move your user authorization to the computer where you are
using PC Access the most.
- You can prepare slide show files on your primary computer and
display them on your secondary computer without either using your
Key Disk or moving your user authorization there. The
Slide Show ACCESSory does not require user authorization to run.
The Slide Show also eliminates the need to dial into your MLS.
For more information, see the Slide Show ACCESSory Main
Menu topic in the PC Access for
Windows Reference Guide.
- Remember, the Key Disk method works only with the
Agent version of PC Access for Windows.
Recovering from an Unauthorized Install
You should not install PC Access for Windows on your secondary
computer when your user authorization is on your primary computer.
If you do, the PC Access SETUP.EXE
program will install all components of PC Access to your secondary computer's hard drive, then
fail with a user authorization error when trying to move your user
authorization from your Disk 1 to your hard drive.
To correct this error:
- Uninstall your user authorization
from your primary computer.
- Insert your PC Access for Windows - Disk 1 in
the diskette drive on your secondary computer.
- Double-click the PC Access for Windows icon on
your secondary computer. PC Access for Windows will automatically
move your user authorization from your PC Access for
Windows - Disk 1 to your secondary computer's hard drive.
- You may now finish setting up
PC Access for Windows on your secondary computer and move your
user authorization back to your primary computer.
