How to Install the PC Access® User Authorization via an External Drive

Quick Contents

[Introduction] [Install to a Computer via an External Drive] [Setting Up PC Access] [Related Information]

Introduction

The PC Access® for Windows CD-ROM contains the program files. The 3.5" disk contains your User Authorization and configuration files. If you are installing PC Access from diskettes, disks 2 - 4 or 5 contain the program files and Disk 1 contains your User Authorization and configuration files. If your computer does not have a 3.5" disk drive, you can still install your User Authorization and configuration files.

If you have access to both of these items:

  • a computer with a 3.5" disk drive
  • a portable external drive. For example, a Zip drive
You can use the instructions on this page to install the PC Access program files, your User Authorization, and configuration files. To get started, see: Install to a Computer via an External Drive. If you need assistance, you can contact MFM Technical Support via e-mail at: mfm-techsupport@mfm.com. MFM does not provide telephone support for these instructions. In addition, MFM does not provide support for Windows, Networks, or other Peripherals you may have connected to your computer. Other Peripherals may include, a USB Floppy Disk Drive, CD-Burner, or External Hard Disk Drive.

Install to a Computer via an External Drive

  1. Install PC Access to your computer. If you need assistance, see: Installing Files.
    • Note: an anti-virus program, like Norton AntiVirus or McAfee AntiVirus, may interfere with the InstallShield installation program. If InstallShield freezes during the installation process, or does not continue further than the Progress Indicator window, temporarily disable your anti-virus program. When you finish installing PC Access for Windows, you can enable your anti-virus program.
  2. After you install the PC Access program files, the Setup program runs the User Authorization Manager (UAM). The UAM tries to perform two separate parts of the installation, but only the first part will work on a non-local disk drive. The first part installs the configuration files and you should allow the UAM to perform this part. After the UAM installs the configuration files, it will prompt you to install the User Authorization. Since you are using a non-local disk drive you need to click Cancel at this point, then proceed to the next step in these instructions.
  3. Instead of using the UAM to install your User Authorization, you need to use the Forced User Authorization Install method. On a Computer with a 3.5" disk drive and a portable external drive, open a MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window:
    • Windows 95/98: click Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt
    • Windows NT 4.0: click Start | Programs | Command Prompt
    • Windows ME: click Start | Programs | Accessories | MS-DOS Prompt
    • Windows 2000: click Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt
    • Windows XP: click Start | Programs or All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt
  4. On the computer with the 3.5" disk drive, insert the PC Access Disk 1 into the disk drive.
  5. Use the instructions below to extract the raw user authorization file from your original PC Access Disk 1 to the C:\ drive. You will need this raw file to perform the Forced User Authorization Install method.
    • PC Access 4.30 users:
           C:
           CD \
           A:
           CD "AX NF ZZ
           ATTRIB -S -H PCAW430.EKB
           COPY PCAW430.EKB C:\
           ATTRIB +S +H PCAW430.EKB
           CD \
           C:

    • PC Access 4.10/4.20 users:
           C:
           CD \
           A:
           CD "AX NF ZZ
           ATTRIB -S -H PCAW410.EKB
           COPY PCAW410.EKB C:\
           ATTRIB +S +H PCAW410.EKB
           CD \
           C:

  6. Next, you will need to transfer the PCAW430.EKB or PCAW410.EKB file from the C:\ drive on this computer to your portable external drive.
  7. On your computer without an 3.5" drive, open a MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window:
    • Windows 95/98: click Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt
    • Windows NT 4.0: click Start | Programs | Command Prompt
    • Windows ME: click Start | Programs | Accessories | MS-DOS Prompt
    • Windows 2000: click Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt
    • Windows XP: click Start | Programs or All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt
  8. Create a directory to store the PCAW430.EKB or PCAW410.EKB file:
    • PC Access 4.30 Users:
          MKDIR C:\430AUTH

    • PC Access 4.10/4.20 Users:
          MKDIR C:\410AUTH

  9. Copy the PCAW430.EKB or PCAW410.EKB file from your portable external drive to the C:\430AUTH or C:\410AUTH directory.
  10. After you copy the PCAW430.EKB or PCAW410.EKB to the C:\430AUTH or C:\410AUTH directory, you can install your user authorization. Type the following commands in the MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window. These commands will force the installation of the user authorization. The SCMOVE command will generate a six digit detailed user code. In step 12, you will submit the detailed user code to MFM Technical Support.
    • PC Access 4.30 Users:
          SUBST X: C:\430AUTH
          CD \PCAWIN
          SCMOVE I X: C: PCAW430 /E /V /C

    • PC Access 4.10/4.20 Users:
          SUBST X: C:\410AUTH
          CD \PCAWIN
          SCMOVE I X: C: PCAW410 /E /V /C

  11. Click this link: No Disk Drive Reset Code Request Form to open the No Disk Drive Reset Code Request Form. You will use this form to submit your six digit detailed user code to MFM Technical Support. After MFM Technical Support receives your six digit detailed user code, they will e-mail you a reset code. After you receive your reset code, continue with the next step in these instructions.
    • Note: Do not press Enter until you enter your reset code. Keep the MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window open until you enter your reset code from MFM Technical Support. If you press Enter before you enter your reset code, you will have to run SCMOVE again. This may change the six digit detailed user code. This means the reset code from MFM Technical Support may no longer be valid.
  12. Enter the reset code from MFM Technical Support and press Enter. After the UAM installs your User Authorization to the C:\PCAWIN directory, it will display "Complete".
  13. Remove the SUBST drive. Type the following command in the MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window to remove the drive:
        SUBST /D X:

  14. When you finish, close the MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt window.
  15. You can remove the C:\430AUTH or C:\410AUTH directory, or keep the directory for future use on this computer. To remove the directory, use Windows Explorer. To open Windows Explorer:
    • Windows 95/98: click Start | Programs | Windows Explorer
    • Windows NT 4.0: click Start | Programs | NT Explorer
    • Windows ME users: click Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer
    • Windows 2000: click Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer
    • Windows XP: click Start | All Programs or Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer
  16. After you remove the directory, run PC Access. Click Start | Programs | PC Access for Windows | PC Access for Windows to run PC Access. To set up PC Access, see: Setting up PC Access.

Setting up PC Access

  1. After you click Start | Programs | PC Access for Windows | PC Access for Windows, PC Access will prompt you to enter your Registration Code. You can find your registration code on your PC Access packaging or on the CD-ROM sleeve.
    • Note: if you previously installed PC Access, it stored your registration code in the REGCODE.DAT file on Disk 1. You do not need to enter your registration code on subsequent installations.
  2. Enter your registration code on the Register PC Access for Windows window. Click OK. Click Cancel on the Back Up PC Access for Windows Setup Files window. PC Access will save the PCAWIN.LIC file in the PC Access executable directory.
  3. On the PC Access for Windows Setup Assistant window, click Basic.
  4. Complete the fields and buttons on the Setup Assistant -- MLS Setup window:
    • Modem Users:
      • In the Phone # to Dial field, enter the MLS dial-up number. If you do not know the MLS dial-up number, contact your local MLS office.
      • In the Speed group, check the 19,200 radio button.
      • In the Emulation group, check the emulation for the type of MLS system you access. If you do not what type of MLS system you connect to, contact your MLS.

    • Internet Users:
      • In the Phone # to Dial field, enter any phone number. You do not need a phone number to connect to your MLS. However, PC Access requires you to enter something in this field.
      • You can ignore the Speed group.
      • In the Emulation group, check the emulation for the type of MLS system you access. If you do not what type of MLS system you connect to, contact your MLS.
  5. Complete the fields on the Setup Assistant -- Agent Setup window. If you do not know your MLS Login Name and MLS Password, contact the MLS office. MFM does not have this information.
  6. Complete the Setup Assistant -- Modem Setup window:
    • Modem Users:
      • Select your modem's COM Port. If you use Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, the Modem Wizard will not read your computer's modem settings from the Windows Registry. Instead of using the Modem Wizard, select your modem's COM Port. Click Test to test the modem. After your modem tests OK, click Done.

    • Internet Users:
      • Click Done to complete the Basic setup.
  7. If you connect to the MLS system via the Internet, you need to complete a few more settings. If you connect your MLS via a modem, continue with the next step in these instructions.
    • Internet Users:
      • From the PC Access Main Menu window, click Setup Menu | Advanced | MLS Setup. Click the TCP/IP tab.
      • In the Host Name or IP Address field, enter the IP address or Host Name for your MLS system. If you do not know the Host Name or IP Address for your MLS system, contact your local MLS office for this information. MFM does not have this information. Click OK.
      • From the Advanced Setup Menu window, click Internet. From the Internet Setup window click one of the following radio buttons:
        • Use LAN to Access the Internet: if you use a cable modem, DSL line or other high-speed Internet connection to access the Internet, select this radio button.
        • Use Dial-up Networking to Access the Internet: if use a modem and phone line to access the Internet, select this radio button.
        • Note: if you use an Online Service like AOL, CompuServe, or MSN, select the Use LAN to Access the Internet radio button.
      • Click OK | Close to return to the PC Access for Windows Main Menu.
  8. When you finish setting up PC Access, back up the following PC Access files to Disk 1:
    • PCAW430.EKB or PCAW410.EKB: this file contains your PC Access User Authorization.
    • PCAWIN.PBK: this is the PC Access Phone Book file. It contains your PC Access MLS Setup window settings.
    • PCAWIN.AGT: this file contains your PC Access agent information. Such as your MLS Login Name and MLS Password.
    • PCAWIN.LIC: this file contains your PC Access License information.
Normally, you would back up the above files to the PC Access Disk 1. However, since your computer does not have a 3.5" disk drive, you may want to back up these files to one of the following:
    • another directory on your computer's hard drive
    • a portable external drive
    • a CD-R / CD-RW disk
You want to back up these files to place that is convenient for you. If you need to reinstall PC Access, you can use these files to restore your settings.
    • Note: the installation program does not create a PC Access desktop shortcut. You will need to create a desktop shortcut to run PC Access. To create a PC Access desktop shortcut, see: How to Create a PC Access Desktop Shortcut.
