The following procedures tell you how to set up a printer in
Windows 3.1x or Windows 95 and/or Windows 98
that lets you print text to a file with
PC Access.

- Double-click your Main group icon in Program
Manager to open the Main group window.
- Double-click the Control Panel icon in the
Main group to open the Control
Panel window.
- Double-click the Printers icon in
Control Panel to open the printers
window.
- Look in the Installed Printers list for an
entry with the name: Generic / Text Only on FILE:.
If you already have this entry, skip ahead to Setting up
PC Access to Print to a File. Otherwise, continue with the
following steps.
- Click the Add >> button to display the
List of Printers:.
- Find Generic / Text Only in the
List of Printers: and click Install.
(Windows may ask you to insert one of your Windows diskettes in your
diskette drive.)
- You should now have this entry highlighted in the
Installed Printers: list: Generic / Text
Only on LPT1:. Click the Connect button.
- Select FILE: from the Ports:
list, and click OK.
- You should now have this entry in the
Installed Printers: list: Generic / Text
Only on FILE:. Click the Close button to
close the Printers window. Close the
Control Panel, and start PC Access. Proceed to
Setting up PC Access to Print to a
File.
- Click Start
| Settings | Printers.
- Double-click the Add Printer icon to run the
Add Printer Wizard. Click the
Next > button to continue.
- The Add Printer Wizard asks how your printer is
attached to your computer. Select Local Printer and
click the Next > button.
- Select Generic in the
Manufacturers: list, then select Generic
/ Text Only in Printers: list. Click the
Next > button.
- Select FILE: Creates a file on disk and
click the Next > button.
- The Wizard suggests a name for this printer.
If necessary, edit the name to: Generic / Text Only on
FILE:. Click the Next > button. Do not
set this printer to be your default Windows printer, and do not
print a test page. Click Finish. (Windows may
prompt you to insert a Windows diskette or CD-ROM.)
- You should now have this icon in your
Printers folder: Generic / Text
Only on FILE:. Close the Printers folder,
and start PC Access. Proceed to Setting
up PC Access to Print to a File.
After you have set up a Generic / Text Only on FILE:
in Windows 3.1 or Windows
95 and/or Windows 98, you need to tell PC Access about this printer:
- Click the Setup Menu button on the PC
Access for Windows Main Menu window.
- Click the Advanced button on the Setup
Assistant window.
- Click the Printer(s) button on the
Advanced Setup Menu window.
- Click the Add button on the Printer
Setup window to open the Add Printer
window.
- In the Name: field on the Add
Printer window, type: Generic / Text Only on
FILE:.
- Click the down-arrow symbol to the right of the
Printer: field to pull down the list of your
Windows printers. Select Generic / Text Only on
FILE:. Click OK to close the Add
Printer window.
- If you wish to set this printer to be your default printer in PC
Access for Windows, highlight Generic / Text Only on
FILE: on the Printer Setup window and
click the Set button.
- If you do not set this printer to be your default printer in PC
Access for Windows, you may still select it while you are online
with your MLS by clicking the Select button on
the Terminal window.
- Click the Close button on the Printer
Setup window, then click Close on the
Advanced Setup Menu window.
- Call your MLS. The Terminal window status
bar shows the printer you are using. If it is not Generic
/ Text Only on FILE:, click the Select
button and select that printer. Print whatever listing reports
you like, but do not print photos. When you print something, Windows
will prompt you for a file name.
