Any PC Access for
Windows version 4.00 users who are running Windows 95 and have the Norton
Utilities for Windows 95 are at risk of damaging their User
Authorization and being unable to run PC Access for Windows. The
Norton Speed Disk program is a utility which
reorganizes
the hard drive to operate more efficiently. Speed Disk improperly ignores the file
attributes of important system files. This causes
Norton Speed Disk to reorganize files that it should not
reorganize.
If Speed Disk does this to your PC Access for Windows User
Authorization files, you will no longer be able to use PC Access for
Windows. The symptom of this problem is usually a PC Access for
Windows User Authorization Error message that starts with the number
7196. To avoid this problem, please follow the steps below. After you
perform these steps, Norton Speed Disk will properly
handle the PC Access for Windows User Authorization files.
- Start Norton Speed Disk
- At the Optimization Method window, click the
Cancel button.
- In the Drives list, select the drive letter
that contains your copy of PC Access for Windows (for example, if
you installed PC Access for Windows to the default location:
C:\PCAWIN, select the
C: drive).
- Select File | Options from the menu bar.
- Click the Customize button on the
Optimization tab of the
Options for Speed Disk window.
- Click the Unmovable Files tab of the
Customize Full Optimization window.
- Click in the entry field under the File
Specification label.
- Type in the file name: "
PCAWINEV.SYS
" (without the quotes) and click
the Add button.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the
Customize Full Optimization window.
- Click the Save button on the Options
for Speed Disk window.
- Exit Norton Speed Disk.
Your Speed Disk program will now ignore the User Authorization files
for PC Access whenever you optimize from now on.
This small change will not impact any of your other programs.
To fix the user authorization problem, Follow the instructions below:
- Get to a DOS prompt and type the following commands:
- cd \pcawin
- attrib -h -r -s pcawinev.sys
- del pcawinev.sys
