[Introduction] [Preventing Windows XP from Re-booting] [Related Information]

Introduction

MFM Technical Support has received several reports about a problem with Windows XP and PC Access for Windows.

Several users reported to MFM that Windows XP may spontaneously re-boot while you are on-line with your MLS. The problem occurs when you use the mouse to navigate around the search screens in the PC Access Terminal window. This problem only occurs in Windows XP.

For a list of possible solutions and work-around to this problem, see: Preventing Windows XP from Re-booting.

Preventing Windows XP from Re-booting

If Windows XP re-boots while you use your mouse to navigate around the PC Access Terminal window, one of the following solutions may correct this problem:

Reinstall Drivers

To prevent Windows XP from re-booting, you may want to uninstall and reinstall your video and/or mouse drivers.

If possible, install a video and/or mouse driver from the manufacturer. Make sure the driver(s) are for Windows XP. The manufacturer may have updated driver(s) specifically for Windows XP.

If an updated driver is not available from the manufacturer, and there is no native Windows XP Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver available from Microsoft; your video card and/or mouse may not be compatible in Windows XP.

Use Your Keyboard

To prevent Windows XP from re-booting while you are in the PC Access Terminal window, you may want to use the arrow and Tab keys on your keyboard.

You may find this method helpful while you are trying the suggestions in the Use Compatibility Modes and Reinstall Drivers sections.

Use Compatibility Modes

To prevent Windows XP from re-booting, you may want to use the Windows XP Compatibility Modes with PC Access for Windows.
  • Note: Microsoft does not support the Windows XP Compatibility Modes. In addition, MFM cannot guarantee that PC Access for Windows will run in any one of the compatibility modes. However, MFM has received reports from some users that the Windows XP Compatibility Modes have solved some PC Access for Windows problems.
Follow the instructions below to set up Windows XP to use one of the compatibility modes.
  1. In Windows XP, click Start | Programs or All Programs | PC Access for Windows. Highlight PC Access for Windows then right-click on it. Next, click Properties.
  2. From the PC Access for Windows Properties window click the Compatibility tab.
  3. In the Compatibility Mode group, select Run this program in compatibility mode for. Select one of the following Compatibility Modes:
    • Windows 95
    • Windows 98 / Windows Me
    • Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5)
    • Windows 2000
    and click Apply | OK.
    • Note: MFM recommends that you select the Windows 2000 compatibility mode first. If this does correct the problem, select another compatibility mode.
  4. Run PC Access and connect to your MLS system. Use the mouse in the PC Access Terminal window to see if this corrects the problem. If the compatibility mode you selected does not correct the problem, select another compatibility mode.
