Mail Servers Incompatible with PC Access E-Mail Accessory

Quick Contents

[Introduction] [E-Mail Accessory Warning Message] [Compatible SMTP Mail Servers] [Related Information]

Introduction

Many Online Services such as: American Online (AOL), Microsoft Network (MSN), Prodigy, CompuServe, and SNAP use a proprietary mail server protocol. This proprietary mail server protocol is only compatible with their software interface. The Online Services listed above do not allow third party e-mail programs to access their POP3/SMTP mail server.

This means the PC Access for Windows 4.30 E-Mail Accessory does not work with any Online Service provider's SMTP mail servers.

E-Mail Accessory Warning Message

When you enter an incompatible e-mail address in the E-Mail Setup window, PC Access displays the following informational message:

  Warning

Caution! At the time this version of PC Access was released,
America On-Line does NOT support E-Mail programs other than
   America's On-Line's proprietary E-Mail software/service.
This means you will not be able to send E-Mail from PC Access
if your only Internet E-Mail account is through America On-Line.
This is a(n) America On-Line limitation and not a limitation
   in PC Access.
This means that the e-mail address you entered in the E-mail Setup window, indicates you use an Online Service, (for example, AOL) that does not allow you to access their mail servers.

However, if you use an SMTP compatible mail server with the E-Mail Accessory, you may use your AOL e-mail address.

Compatible SMTP Mail Servers

If you would like to use the PC Access E-mail Accessory, you will need to subscribe to a third party mail service or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). ISP's do not use proprietary mail server protocol. This means they allow third party e-mail programs (like the PC Access E-mail Accessory) to use their SMTP mail server.

Many third party e-mail programs such as: Netscape Communicator, Qualcomm's Eudora, Forte, Inc. Agent, and Ritlabs TheBat! can access the ISP's SMTP mail server without any needed proprietary interface or protocol. If any third party e-mail programs can access and use the ISP's SMTP mail server, then the PC Access E-Mail Accessory will work with your ISP's SMTP mail server.

When you have access to a mail server, you need to complete the fields on the E-Mail Setup window. On this window, enter your ISP's SMTP mail server name in the My Internet Mail Server field.
