Introduction

PC Access® for Windows uses InstallShield to install its program files. If you have difficulty installing PC Access for Windows, you could be having trouble with InstallShield. If any one of the following conditions are true, InstallShield may be unable to install the PC Access for Windows program files:
  • your Windows TEMP directory contains InstallShield installation files. This could be caused by cancelling the installation of a program that uses Installshield.
  • InstallShield conflicts with another Windows program or process.
  • InstallShield conflicts with your Anti-Virus program.
  • If you use Windows 2000 or XP, make sure you have sufficient read and write privileges. For more information click Start | Help. Search for User Accounts. Windows will display several help topics about User Accounts.

Installing PC Access with InstallShield

In the instructions that follow, you will run Windows Disk Cleanup to remove any unnecessary files (including any InstallShield Installation files). You will also temporarily disable your Anti-Virus software and install PC Access.
  1. Run the Disk Cleanup utility to remove any unnecessary files and folders from the Windows temporary folders.
    • Windows XP users: click Start | Programs or All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.
    • Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000 users: click Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.
  2. In the Files to Delete group on the Disk Cleanup window, check the Temporary Files check box. Optionally, you may also want to check the Recycle Bin check box.
  3. Click OK on the Disk Cleanup window. Click Yes to delete the files from the areas you selected.
    • Note: due to a bug in the Windows Disk Cleanup utility, Disk Cleanup may not remove all of the unnecessary files/folders from all of the Windows temporary folders. To remove all of the files, use Windows Explorer.
      • Windows XP users: click Start | Programs or All Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer.
      • Windows Me/2000 users: click Start | Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer.
      • Windows 98/98SE users: click Start | Programs | Windows Explorer.
    • In Windows Explorer navigate to the following folders. Delete the all of the files in these folders:
      • Windows 2000/XP users:
        C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
        C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp
        C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp
      • Windows 98/98SE/Me users:
        C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
        C:\TEMP (if this directory exists)
  4. Restart Windows. Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus program.
  5. Install PC Access. If InstallShield fails to install PC Access see: Downloading Installation Files.

Downloading Installation Files

If you completed the steps in Installing PC Access with InstallShield and you are unable to install PC Access, you can try downloading an installation file.

Download the PC Access installation files.

  • PC Access 4.30 users
    1. Download the PC Access 4.30.158 installation files from the MFM Web site:
      http://www.mfm.com/~mknipfer/pcaccess/PCA158CD-Install.exe
    2. The file size is: 8.17MB.
    3. Save PCA158CD-Install.exe to your C:\ drive.
    4. Open Windows Explorer and double-click on PCA158CD-Install.exe to install PC Access 4.30.158.
    5. If you are able to use the PCA158CD-Install.exe installation to install PC Access, there may be something wrong with your PC Access 4.30 CD and/or computer's CD-ROM drive reading the CD.

      If you are unable to use the PCA158CD-Install.exe installation file to install PC Access 4.30.158, there may be something critically wrong in Windows. You may want to check your Windows computer for viruses. Virus infections may also cause these types of problems.

    6. If you are unable to use the PCA158CD-Install.exe installation file to install PC Access, you may want to try installing PC Access in Safe Mode. For more information, see: Installing PC Access in Safe Mode.

  • PC Access 4.10/4.20 users:
    1. Download the PC Access 4.20.134 installation files from the MFM Web site:
      http://www.mfm.com/~mknipfer/pcaccess/pca134inst.exe
    2. This file size is: 4.28MB.
    3. Save pca134inst.exe to your C:\ drive.
    4. Open Windows Explorer and double-click on pca134inst.exe to install PC Access 4.20.134.
    5. If you are able to use the pca134inst.exe installation to install PC Access, there may be something wrong with your PC Access 4.10/4.20 media and/or computer's 3.5" disk drive reading the media.

      If you are unable to use the pca134inst.exe installation file to install PC Access 4.20.134, there may be something critically wrong in Windows. You may want to check your Windows computer for viruses. Virus infections may also cause these types problems.

    6. If you are unable to use the pca134inst.exe installation file to install PC Access, you may want to try installing PC Access in Safe Mode. For more information, see: Installing PC Access in Safe Mode.
