How to Update PC Access Network Versions

Quick Contents

[Introduction] [Download an Update] [Install the Update] [Moving your SYSDIR and WINDIR Directories] [Related Information]

Introduction

If you are running PC Access Network versions 4.10.111 and earlier, you can update to PC Access 4.20.132.

Follow the instructions in Download an Update to download the 4.20.132 update.

Download an Update

  • Note: The instructions below apply to Network versions 4.10.111 and earlier. If you are running Network version 4.30, do not use the instructions below.
  1. Exit PC Access on all of the workstations.
    • Note: Before you install the update make sure PC Access is not in use on any of the workstations. If any of the workstations are running Windows 98/98SE, NT 4.0, or Windows 2000, restart the workstations. Windows 98/98SE, NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 tend to keep files locked on a network connection even after you exit a program.
  2. Create a temporary directory on the server. For example, you can create a directory called PCAUPD. This directory will store the Build 132 update.
  3. Download an update from: Download PC Access for Windows 4.20 Build 132 Update. Store the update in the PCAUPD directory you created in step 2.
  4. Before you install the update, verify that the following directories exist on the server:
           X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\SYSDIR
           X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\WINDIR

    • Note: These instructions assume that you installed PC Access to the X drive, and in the PCAWIN directory on your server.
If the above directory structure exist on your server, see: Install the Update. If the above directory structure does not exist on your server, see: Moving your SYSDIR and WINDIR Directories.

Install the Update

  1. Install the Build 132 update to the PC Access for Windows directory on the server. For example, X:\PCAWIN.
  2. After you install the Build 132 update to the server, you need to copy the following files from one of the workstation's C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to the X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\SYSDIR directory on the server:
          BC520RTL.DLL
          BDS52.DLL
          BIVBX11.DLL
          BIVBX31.DLL
          CTL3DV2.DLL
          D2HLNK16.DLL
          D2HTOOLS.DLL
          MSOUTLIN.VBX
          OWL52.DLL

Use the following DOS command to copy the files:
          COPY C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BC520RTL.DLL X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\SYSDIR

    • Note: Replace BC520RTL.DLL in the above command with next file name on the list. Continue with this process until you have copied all of the above files.
  3. Copy the following files from one of the workstation's C:\WINDOWS directory to the X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\WINDIR directory on the server:
           D2HNAV16.EXE
           D2HNAV16.HLP

Use the following DOS command to copy the files:
           COPY C:\WINDOWS\D2HNAV16.EXE X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\WINDIR

    • Note: Replace D2HNAV16.EXE in the above command with next file name on the list.
  4. Steps 6 and 7 updated the PC Access for Windows files on the server. Next you need to update each workstation to Build 132.
  5. On each workstation, click Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt. At the MS-DOS Prompt window, type the following commands:
        X:
        CD\PCAWIN
        COPY .\WORKSTA\SYSDIR\*.* C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM /Y
        COPY .\WORKSTA\WINDIR\*.* C:\WINDOWS /Y

Repeat the above commands on each workstation running PC Access for Windows. This will update each workstation to PC Access for Windows 4.20.132.

Moving your SYSDIR and WINDIR Directories

Earlier PC Access 4.10 Network versions did not install the SYSDIR and WINDIR directories to the WORKSTA directory. Instead PC Access installed the SYSDIR and WINDIR directories to the PCAWIN directory. Before you can install the update, you need to correct the problem with the directory structure.

Use the instructions below if you do not have the following directory structure:

       X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\SYSDIR
       X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\WINDIR

  1. If you are running an earlier version of PC Access 4.10 Network version, you have the following directories:
           X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA
           X:\PCAWIN\SYSDIR
           X:\PCAWIN\WINDIR

    • Note: These instructions assume that you installed PC Access to the X drive, and in the PCAWIN directory on your server.
If your directories match the directories above, you need to move your SYSDIR and WINDIR directories to your WORKSTA directory.
  2. Click Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt.
  3. In your MS-DOS Prompt window, type the following commands:
          X:
          CD\PCAWIN
          MOVE SYSDIR X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA
          MOVE WINDIR X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA

Next, verify that you have the following directory structure:
          X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\SYSDIR
          X:\PCAWIN\WORKSTA\WINDIR

  4. If you have the above directory structure, see: Install the Update. If you do not have the above directory structure, complete the PC Access for Windows Problem Report Form and MFM Technical Support will assist you.
