How to Delete the PCAWIN.PTR file

Introduction

PC Access uses a printer alias file (PCAWIN.PTR) to store information about your Windows default printer. PC Access relies on the PCAWIN.PTR file to print listings from your MLS. PC Access uses the PCAWIN.PTR file to:
  • Allow multiple copies of the same printer driver with different settings.
    • Note: This is helpful if your printer needs different settings to print labels from your MLS.
  • Switch between several printers. You can add additional printers in the Printer Setup window.
If PC Access or your computer corrupts the
PCAWIN.PTR file, you may see one of the following messages:
  • PCAWIN.EXE caused a GPF in module PCAWIN.EXE at 004a:xxxxxxxx
  • PCAWIN.EXE caused a GPF in module PCAWIN.EXE at 0049:xxxxxxxx
  • Cannot print to MLS printer
  • Cannot verify printer driver version
  • Cannot load printer driver
  • Printer driver mismatch
  • Pure Virtual Function Called

Deleting the PCAWIN.PTR file in Windows 95/98/NT

From your Windows desktop:

  1. Click Start | Find | Files or Folders.
  2. In the Find: All Files window:
    • In the Named: field, type PCAWIN.PTR .
    • In the Look in: field, select the drive you installed PC Access to. If you used the default drive when you installed PC Access, select C:.
  3. Click Find Now.
  4. In the bottom of the Find: All Files window, right-click on PCAWIN.PTR. Click Delete from the pop-up window.
  5. Run PC Access for Windows.
    • Note: PC Access will detect that the PC Access executable directory does not contain a PCAWIN.PTR file. PC Access will create a new PCAWIN.PTR file based on your Windows default printer.
    • Note: This procedure assumes you have specified a default printer in Windows. If you have not specified a default printer in Windows, follow the procedure here.

Deleting the PCAWIN.PTR file in Windows 3.1x

From your Windows desktop:

  1. Click File | Exit Windows.
  2. At the MS-DOS Prompt, type the following commands:
    • Note: If you accepted the defaults when you installed PC Access for Windows, your executable directory is C:\PCAWIN. (If you installed PC Access to a different directory, substitute that directory in the following commands.)
      CD\PCAWIN
      DEL  PCAWIN.PTR
       
    This will delete the PCAWIN.PTR file.
  3. Type:
      WIN
      
    to restart Windows.
  4. Run PC Access for Windows.
    • Note: PC Access will detect that the PC Access executable directory does not contain a PCAWIN.PTR file. PC Access will create a new PCAWIN.PTR file based on your Windows default printer.
    • Note: this procedure assumes you have specified a default printer in Windows. If you have not specified a default printer in Windows, follow the procedure here.
