How to Capture a UNC Printer Name to LPT1:

Introduction

USB printers may not work with PC Access for Windows 4.20 and 4.30. This is because Microsoft does not allow Windows 16-bit programs to use the USB subsystems in the operating system.

Some USB printers use long device names. 16-bit programs cannot access these long device names, know as Universal Naming Convention or Uniform Naming Convention (UNC).

If your printer driver does not prevent you from capturing the USB UNC to a 16-bit device name (LPT1:, LPT2:, etc.), capturing the USB UNC to a 16-bit device name should solve the printing problem. To capture a UNC printer name to LPT1:, see: How to Capture a UNC Printer Name to LPT1:


How to Capture a UNC Printer Name to LPT1:

  • Note: MFM Technical Support does not support the following steps. These steps may vary from computer to computer and printer to printer. If you have difficulty following the steps listed below, contact your computer manufacturer or an independent consultant for assistance.
  1. In Windows 95/98/98SE/Me, click Start | Settings | Printers.
  2. Locate your printer on the Printers window. Right-click on your printer and select Properties from the pop-up window.
  3. On the printer's Properties window click on the Details tab.
  4. In the Print to the following port drop-down list, right-click on the text in this field. Click Copy from the pop-up window. This will copy the printer's UNC name to the Windows clipboard.
  5. Click the Capture Printer Port button.
  6. On the Capture Printer Port window, select LPT1: from the Device drop-down list.
    • Note: If another printer or device on your computer uses LPT1:, you need to select another LPT device. For example, select LPT2:.
  7. Right-click in the Path: drop-down list and select Paste from the pop-up window. This will paste the printer's UNC name into the Path: drop-down list.
  8. Make sure the Print to the following port drop-down list contains LPT1: or the LPT port you selected. Click OK.
  9. In the Print to the following port drop-down list on the Details tab, select the LPT port you just added on the Capture Printer Port window.
  10. Click Apply | OK on the Properties window to accept the changes you just made.
  11. Close the Windows Printers window.
